“There is always space in the defensive line,” explained Eddie Jones at his post-match press conference following England’s biggest win over France since 1911. “You’ve only got 15 players.”

Jones articulated the cause-and-effect, cat-and-mouse nature of manipulating back-field defences. Each of his team’s six tries came using kicks as England capitalised on some poor positioning from a France backline featuring four centres.

However, Jones also left something dangling for Warren Gatland and Shaun Edwards to think about:

“At the moment we’re having a great deal of success with our kicking but that could create opportunities in the next game with something else.”
